College Moving Guide: How to Make Moving Easier

When it comes time to move to college, having a plan to get everything done will make the move less stressful. With so many different elements to college moving, you’ll want to make sure you’ve done your research and you’re prepared for success.

Putting a plan into place can save you time and money. You won’t pack things you don’t need and you’ll choose a moving company that suits your needs.

To help you make moving easier, we’ve put together a handy guide for your college move. Read on to learn what you should focus on for the big day.

Make a List

This might seem obvious, but making a list of all the things you think you need to take with you is essential. Start by making the list as complete as you can. Don’t limit the list at the start because you want to make sure you have everything you need when you get there.

Once you have your list and start going through the college moving process you can eliminate things you discover you won’t need. Start your list early so that you have time to adjust it before you begin packing.

Think about the various parts of your day and schedule. What kind of things will you need in your dorm? What activities will you be doing that you need equipment for?

Focus on the Essentials

Once you have the list, you can weed out the non-essentials. For example, on your list, you’ll likely have a section for your clothing. Do you need thirty different outfits or will twenty do the job?

Some of the decisions you make about essential items will be dictated by what your college offers you. If it’s easy for you to do laundry in your dorm building, for example, maybe you don’t need as many outfits. But if you have to go off campus to find laundry facilities, having enough clothing will be more important.

Packing essentials is tough. It means you will have to leave things behind that you think you really need. Being strong in the decision-making process will reduce your packing and make your college moving experience much easier and cheaper.

Make a Timeline

Make a timeline for your packing and moving. Start about eight weeks out from your moving day. Set the timeline up so that you have weekly items to get checked off the list.

A timeline will make sure you don’t forget to do things in a timely manner. You’ll reduce the stress of college moving day by knowing what you have to do and when.

One of the first things you’ll need to do at the eight-week mark is research college movers and the services they offer. Get quotes and ask lots of questions about the moving company. Find the one that makes you feel the most comfortable and sure that your possessions will make it to your dorm when you need them to.

You should have your moving company booked at least six weeks ahead of your moving date. Don’t leave it to the last minute or else you will end up with a more expensive move. You also might not get the company you really want because they are too busy.

Know the Rules of Moving In

As part of your timeline, you should find out the rules of your college for moving day. Do this at least six weeks ahead of the move so that you aren’t making decisions that aren’t allowed by your college.

Find out what you are allowed to bring. Does your residence allow electronics, TVs, etc.? Do you need insurance?

Check out whether there are regulations for moving trucks. Do they have to park and unload in certain areas? Are there specific times when they are supposed to haul your things into the dorm rooms?

Colleges have a well-oiled system for college moving, so checking out what you can and can’t do or what you can and can’t bring will make the move a lot smoother.

Find Out What Comes with the Dorm

It’s worth finding out what comes with the dorm. If you have access to a fridge, for example, you don’t need to purchase one and have it moved. You’ll make your move a lot easier and cheaper if you don’t pack and ship things that you won’t need.

This is especially true when it comes to furniture. Big items like dressers or tables and chairs will quickly fill up moving space. There’s no need to take those things if they come with the dorm.

But it’s not just the big stuff. You might be surprised and learn that things like curtains, clothes hangers, and even bedding are provided. Again, knowing what comes with the room allows you to plan your move more effectively and make sure you’re only shipping the essentials.

Pack a To-Go Bag

While your college moving company will take care of the big stuff, they might have a strict window when they can move you in. It’s possible that you won’t have everything unpacked by the time you first need your toiletries or a change of clothes.

This is especially true for the first night or two. You’re going to want to get out and explore and meet new people as soon as you arrive. So, make a to-go bag part of your college packing agenda so that your to-go bag is ready when you arrive.

Make sure your bag has some spare clothing, the essential wash items, and any other must-have things for your first couple of nights. That will reduce the pressure of having to get everything unpacked and ready as soon as you arrive. You’ll have a little wiggle room to go out and see what your college has to offer when you first get there.

You can make college moving much easier if you pay attention to the things above. It’s always going to be stressful, for you and your family, but, as you can see, there are things you can do to limit the craziness.
